“Tell me, I hear they have cappuccino in Aberystwyth now. Is it true?”
“Yes,” I said. “It’s true.”
The man smiled and gave a slight shake of his head. “My, my. And an escalator? I hear there is an escalator there now?”
“No, I don’t think so. I think the nearest one is still in Shrewsbury.”
Malcolm Pryce, “Don’t cry for me Aberystwyth”
Whilst the Malcom Pryce books are not 100% true (for example, the town is not run by a gang of mobster druids, and there’s not a strip joint at the end of the pier) they do contain a grain of truth, and as far as I know there is no escalator in Aber. There’s also no Marks & Spencer, or Starbucks, which as far as I’m concerned is absolutely bloody marvellous. I’m feeling the lack of a branch of Lush though.
No Lush?
When can I come?
Would you like anything importing when I visit this weekend!!
Just steer clear of the Druids, look you.
No Starbucks is a good thing but can one get a decent coffee anywhere?
Roger – yes you can come to aber whenever you like.
Lucy – thanks for the offer, but I’m ok for Lush stuff right now!
Bill – haven’t seen any yet, but I’ll try my best to avoid them
Martin – there are some great little independent coffee shops, and there’s a costa on the main street but I’ve not bothered with that one yet.
I recommend a follow-up to this.
I have been told that there is actually an escalator now, although I am not sure where. Sadly, Starbucks are set to move in to The Union in a few months time. I am sure I am not the only person who has a problem with that.
In related news, Tesco are heading to Mill Street, and Sainsbury’s look set to arrive fairly soon too.
Great site. Found it the other day because of a friend who emailed me about a certain mayor. Keep up the good work.
