The new HTML5 features let you do some of the things you can do on mobile devices without having to write specifically mobile code – so you can do graphics, access the location of the device, save things to the device, access the accelerometer, and so on. All from within a web browser. My slides and demos are here: http://users.aber.ac.uk/hmd1/html5/
if you want to take a look.

There were a load of cool speakers and I found the event surprisingly useful – as someone who doesn’t do mobile specific development, and who doesn’t even own an iPhone or iPad, I was worried about how relevant I’d find the conference. But it was great; there was a lot of fantastic inspiring content on how to be productive, and work together, and do geeky stuff in an interesting and creative manner. Here are my highlights –

A lot of the talks were about building creative applications and working in interdisciplinary teams (Alyson Fielding‘s, Kate Ho‘s, and John Cromie‘s talks fell into this category). John Cromie’s talk about the Shakespear app, the Wasteland app and a fab Leonardo Da Vinci one actually made me consider getting myself an iThing.

A lot of the talks were about working in startups and how to deal with the issues that startup life brings; Dave Addey spoke about what he’d learned whilst starting Agant (authors of the QI app and TheBaftaNominatedMalcolmTucker app ™ amongst others) and growing the company, and the famous Evan Doll spoke about similar themes from a US perspective; what he’d done since leaving Apple and starting Flipboard. One of the interesting things for me, as an academic, was the similarity between startup life and the PhD process. There were lots of pieces of advice about being prepared to throw stuff away, dealing with those days when you just don’t love the project any more, managing co-workers and bosses and colleagues, etc. With a small tweak these things would apply equally well to university life.

The real highlight for me was Jan Pinkava’s talk on creativity. My favourite quote? “I feel like Ned Ludd at a Jacquard Loom convention“. He spoke for an hour with no slides about being creative and working in Hollywood. Quite a coup to get him to speak; he’d been in Aberystwyth to receive a fellowship at the uni (and he used to be in the department) so the conference organisers invited him – a fantastic talk and truly entertaining, full of ideas about creativity, inspiration, storytelling, and editing.

It’s been a busy week this week – I went to iOSdev UK, the national conference for people building software for iPhones, iPads and all those kinds of things.
