Ada Lovelace Day is an international day of blogging about women in computing (and in broader science) – where people all over the world write an article about a woman in tech who’s inspired them. This year Ada Lovelace Day (ALD) falls on Friday October 7th, and we’re stepping it up a notch by putting on some events to celebrate women in computing in a big way. These events are in London, and are open to all (not just women). BCSWomen are hosting these two events at BCS London, they’re fun and cheap, and I’m going to be at both. More details below…

ALD Android Extravaganza!

This is a one-day Android workshop being run by Karen Petrie and I. The workshop doesn’t require any programming skills – we’ll be using AppInventor to build a simple android game, and I’ll be giving some talks on more general Android development stuff. So you won’t end up able to write a fully featured Android app (it is only a day, after all) but you will have had a go, built a simple game, and you’ll know what questions to ask to take your Android development to the next level. The aim of the day is to give a high level overview of the tech stuff, and to have some fun playing around with visual tools for development. It’s £5 + VAT: bring your own laptop and an Android device if you have one. The Android development workshop booking page is here. We’re not providing lunch, so either bring a packed lunch or be prepared to pop out for a sarnie.

Ada Lovelace Day Live!

The evening event is going to be great – we’ve got a fab speaker lineup including Sue Black (the subject of my first ever blog post!), Maggie Philbin, Helen Arney, Gia Milinovich, and others. It’ll be a mix of tech, standup, music, and more. The price is £12+VAT, and this includes a buffet supper & wine, so it’s a bargain. Get your tickets now before they sell out… the Ada Lovelace Day Live! booking page is here.

As keen followers of this blog will know I started it back in 2009 for Ada Lovelace Day.
